GeEk giRL

GeEk giRL

Right, here's the thing...I prefer not to write a bad review. I know constructive criticism is a good thing but I'm the sort of girl that would rather not waste my time listening to a CD that is a load of crap when I could listen to something a lot better and actually want to write about. I'd been talking to Fi from GeEk giRL for the past couple of weeks and I weren't quite sure what to make of her...she's...original. I will say that some of their songs are good, catchy, listenable and yeah pretty good but others, not so. When I knew I was going to be reviewing their CD I was a little worried but when it came through in the mail I was actually very imrpessed. I opened the envelope and for a minute wondered why the hell I'd got a DVD. I hadn't it was just very well presented and extremely professional album, could I have been wrong about this band? With 9 songs on the album I'm not going to do what I do normally and review each and every one seperately as you'll end up with a dissertation! I'm going to base the review on the album as a whole, with my cup of tea at the ready...PLAY!

Wow I was wrong! The first song is extremely catchy, great bass line and drum beat this is not a band to be played on a computer it has to be played on a CD player by the seems of this! It's comparable to any british indie pop band with a bit of a bounce, I could dance to this. I definately under estimated them! Fi being the multi talented singer she is started playing acoustic guitar and piano at 9 is incredible. GeKk giRL are from Manchester and I was shocked to hear they head lined the womens stage at Pride but after hearing the opening track of this album I can now see why. From this song it rolls in to a heavier brit rock song, classic guitar riffs, totally raw sound like PJ Harvey's song This Is Love I wouldn't be surprised if Fi states her as an inspiration. Reading through the booklet inlay of the album I spot Pink Floyd on Joel's page (bass player) you can really tell each members different influences through listening, the blend is fantastic! I Wanna Be is song 3, can I stop writing this and get up to dance around like a loony this song is so cool! I owe Fi gigantic apologies for our previous talks she's completely shocked me. If the songs she sent me before were a joke to trick me it certainly worked! This is a CD for promotional use only but I really couldn't care less I'm gonna stick it on my shelf and steal it for myself! It would really suit anybody, maybe not ANYBODY like death metal fans but if you like brit rock, indie, pop, rock, stuff you can bounce around to and pretty much anything except death metal then go buy it, it's very fucking cool. Oh I recognise this song...Here We Go (Again). GeEk giRL are entering a battle of the bands I'm putting together and entered a song that really wasn't up for it. I wasn't too impressed with this song I told them to replace it with but it sounds a lot better on a CD player than it does on MySpace! Impressed (again). This one has a bit of a ska feel to it, I've just noticed....the bounce I've been talking about is a ska bounce. Minus the trumpets these could easily support any punk, ska, acoustic, pop, rock, etc band verging on the edge of a lot of different styles. Ur So Cool is cool but not as good as the other songs I've heard so far. It keeps the bounce and catchiness of the other songs but it's not as strong. This album has definate sing-a-long capability, it'd be great heard live or played at a party to get the crowd going!

Uh oh, is this the classic ballad that you find on every album ever made?....Yes, bugger, I'm not a ballad fan...wait hang on...maybe not! You Owe Me. How strange is this song, not as great as the other songs but is half ballad, half brit rock'n'roll. I like the chorus but I'm not a big ballad fan and the verses kind of suck. A ballad for me has to be, I don't know I can't explain it. It has to really hit a chord with me, it has to be memorable and bring amazing images to me but this unfortunately doesn't do any of them. The song's saved by the chorus apart from the country sounding bit when Fi sings the word "love" what the hell's that about? Oh well never mind there's always a song on an album I don't like, if there isn't then I'm confused. O is the only song that really lets this album down. It's another slowish one with a very raw chorus but it sounds depressive and even though it has a funky bit in the middle I'm looking forward to the next one starting...SKIP!

Aww piano, I love piano being a big fan of Tori Amos this will have a lot to live up to if it wants to impress me. Titled Elvis this song starts off beautifully, finally a ballad with meaning that manages to strike a chord. I don't want to write about this one because no matter what I say it won't be able to give it enough justice so I think I may just sit back and relax with my eyes shut and let the song take me away. If I was to buy this album I would buy it purely on the fact that this song is on it! Fi's vocals are beautiful and the piano is gorgeous with excellent drums, bass and guitar which doesn't drown out the piano in the chorus. I think worthy enough for Tori Amos fans to love. The piano is not as complicated as many Tori Amos songs but still as beautiful.

Well after that the last song is Devil And The Dolly, woken up from my relaxed mood after the last song it's back to typical rawness of GeEk giRL. I'm half expecting some fiddle somewhere in this, I don't know why and thankfully there isn't. It's pretty catchy but not the best on the album. Well I wasn't going to write about every song but I think I have, this band have managed to make me contradict everything I've ever said about them which can only be a good thing. I was totally wrong about this band and if you've heard them on myspace...forget it! Buy this album and play it the only way it can be played, on your CD player. If you're a brit rock/indie/punk fan then buy it, it's very good indeed and I have only one thing to say to the band...Sorry!

Oh wait I was about to post this when a bonus track appeared...Fcuk U. Acoustic? Yeah, cool I like acoustic. They probably could've wrote nicer lyrics as it's an acoustic and I prefer pretty acoustic songs but it's still pretty good. Sort of reminds me of a Nirvana coustic track (if the vocals were male and growlier).
