Rizzo Review
When an envelope came through to me containing a CD by a band who had only just formed 4 months ago let's just say I wasn't expecting to be impressed. Well...how wrong could I have been! For a band that's only been together this long you'd probably expect them to only just be practicing and rehearsing but Rizzo have managed to create what most bands take twice as long to do! The chemistry in the band seems absolutely perfect as you hear the music, their 3 track demo totally blew me out of my seat! The first song was Bulletproof, I hit play and a gentle drum started to flow in to a calm guitar which then melts in to Amy Fry's melodic vocals...nice...then suddenly it hits you! A classic rock'n'roll guitar bursts it's way in quickly taking this track in to a totally new direction. With addictive lyrics in the chorus you're sure to be getting your air guitars out and be giving this one a try yourself! I will honestly say that at first I didn't think the song was going to be as good as it was but it definately set the standards very high for the next track, Fall Out.
No suprise with this one as the guitars crash in straight away hard and fast keeping the rock'n'roll vibe of Bulletproof strong. Sometimes 2 guitars can be a little too much however, Amy and Nick are both amazing guitarists who gel together so well you just cannot tell them apart. If it wasn't for the fact there was a third track on this demo I would've played Fall Out over and over again. Any rock'n'roll or punk fan who have never heard of this band would be shocked to find out they're not already huge! By the time the third track was ready to come on I didn't want Fall Out to end! Rizzo are a band with a LOT of potential and with this quality after 4 months one can only imagine where they'll be in 4 years!
Around Me was track 3 and to be honest it wasn't as strong as the first two. In true Rizzo style (or so it seems) it started with the guitars, only this time they sounded a little depressed but thankfully saved by Amy's voice shortly after. After hearing Bulletproof and remembering how it totally suprised me I carried on listening and I'm glad I did! The chorus is again just unbelievable, it reminded me of an early Tegan & Sara song. Every string, every beat and every voice eased in to one mix of music that you don't want to end. Once the chorus had finished I totally forgot about the depressive guitars and really started getting in to it. Around Me is a more mellow track than Bulletproof and Fall Out but still manages to keep that little bit of rock'n'roll inside with an amazing arrangement of lyrics and vocal harmonies.
In all I was extremely impressed as nothing much had managed to shock me until I got this CD. I've had it for around a week now and I just don't want to take it out of the CD player. In March 2006 Rizzo played their first gig at a sold out show at The Twist in Colchester and have since played a number of hugely popular shows. Whether you want to relax at home or blast it out of your speakers Rizzo are definately a band that are going to be around for a long time and suit your every need...are you still reading this...what are you waiting for GO CHECK THEM OUT!
